Do you make a mess

March 2nd, 2008 · 5 Comments

when you sit down to create or are you neat all thru the process?

This is where I started yesterday, making a nice neat pile on a chair beside my work table. This does pile does not last long. I really have no energy to worry about how big a mess I am making when I am creating.

This is where I ended up! Piles everywhere, scraps everywhere! Cleanup is a job in itself. But I dont think about that until I am done. I can’t even imagine being neat all thru the process that would so interrupt my zone of creativity with the reality of what was to come at clean up time.

Some might think that having a big mess and huge piles of fabric and supplies everywhere indicates that  somehow  we dont know what we are doing. You feel indecisive, not sure of yourself and the mess proves it.

Not so! I think it means I have a big palette and I am not afraid to use it.

I work in the zone, my creative zone, I fill it up with all the things I might use and I begin to think, try different colors, differnt fabrics, changing this and changing that until my eye finds just what works for this project.  And most of all I enjoy the process without thinking of the aftermath.

How do you create? What sets you free, where do you find yourself when in the zone? I find myself in the middle of a big mess having loads of fun, playing with everything on my palette!

I too find my self in a huge mess once I stop. Usually when I start something I like to get a few hours worth of work done on it. My cats love the mess. They chase strings and scraps all across the hardwood floor.

Well it’s good to see that I’m not the only one! I love having everything out around me while i’m working. It tends to stay out longer than it should though I really need a sewing space! It’s usually my entire kitchen that is a mess.

used to make a mess all over my dining room, it was horrible at dinner times everyone would want to eat and I had a huge mess all over. So I did away with the dining room and switched my living room and dining room around and took over the old living room and turned it into a studio. I dont really entertain so having a big dining room wasnt a necessity in my life.
I love having a studio room much more.

When I moved all my stuff to the new room, my daughter was amazed that I could stuff that much stuff into the littler dining room.

And yes the Cats! lets not forget how much they love fabric!!!

Hi Michelle! Holly’s Mom here! It’s nice to see another “messy” one! Impossible to keep it neat during the middle of a project! :-) What happened to all the space on my cutting table! Yikes! I could use 3 cutting tables and they’d ALL be covered with STUFF! ;-)

If I had ten cutting tables I am sure they would be full of stuff , somedays I need another room!
