how to do a blanket stitch

Make a knot in the thread and bring it up through the felt to the top. Keep the thread behind the needle and go in about 1/4 inch and come up at the edge of your shape you are stitching on, as you see in the photo above. Pull thread all the way thru.
Make a couple of stitches the same way, be sure to keep the thread behind the tip of the needle.
Continue on around your shape, coming in about 1/4 inch, more if you want a larger blanket stitch, and bring the needle up at the edge, like you see in the photo above.
This photo shows the blanket stitch as I progress on around this flower. I try to keep my stitches the same size and length. I also keep the close together so that it gets stitched down securely.
This is a photo of the whole flower stitched down. You could now cut out around this flower and add another layer of stitching to your project.
I like to pick contrasing threads when doing the blanket stitch, it helps bring it all to life.
