This thought has been on my mind lately as I try to re-energize myself to get back on track after a long summer. Between breaking my wrist and the typical busy things of summer and kids home all day, I guess you could say I got off to a rough start.
I now need to get my momentum going and get back to work. And with that comes thoughts of the direction I want my work and business to go this year.
My year kind of goes from September to September rather than starting at the beginning of the year. I need to consider where do I want to head to, what goal have I set for myself, what is attainable and what do I have to do to get there.
While these are all valid thoughts, you can get stuck over thinking and over planning where you want to be. Evaluating too many options and possibilities. Worrying over things that could go wrong or impede your path also creep in there to get in my way. Even making choices about what you do and dont want to do can be difficult.
Busying yourself with details can get away from you and before you know it you aren’t doing very much at all. You feel like you are because after all you did do all that planning and thinking…..but in reality you haven’t really gotten very far. Which can in some round about way feel like you are working so hard and not getting anywhere. I call this needing to get out of my own way!
So how do you get out of your own way?
I have to stop thinking for one. I tend to do that way too much anyway. Then I need to get working.
Do something everyday. Doing something makes me want to do more something. And then I get things done. I focus on what part I am doing at the moment and try not to look to far into the future and concern myself with future events and possibilities. That’s not to say I don’t or haven t thought about those things at all. I have. I also know that over thinking, planning, worrying can take up way more time than i realize and get in the way of doing! So I must focus on small bits of the process as as I go along in order to stay on track.
This just gets things done!
Sometimes the whole journey unfolds in its own way no matter how much you plan. It is good to have a rough outline of your plans but getting to work and following the path is more likely to yield results than all the planning in the world. Sometimes we get so caught up in evaluating things that we don’t even realize we standing in our own way.
What do you do to get out of your way, how do you handle your process, getting stuck and getting too caught up in your head?
